Chapter 6

Bountiful Bunnies

Holy Thursday came around faster than the Sisters expected. They still had much work to do for the egg hunt. Sister Lovely was preparing cupcakes and treats to sell. Sister Shiny was cleaning the house—making it spotless for all the children who would be dressed in their new Easter clothes. Sister Lacey was traveling around town, hanging fliers in local churches and parks, inviting families to join them on Easter Sunday for the afternoon egg hunt. All the Sisters prayed that the weatherman was right and that it would be a wonderfully sunny day.

Sister Wanda finished coloring the eggs collected this morning as she hummed happily in the kitchen. The phone rang, but with her hands covered with dye, she decided to let Mother Mercy answer it. Sure enough, Mother Mercy picked up the extension in her office.

It was Father McNulty—and he had a special request.

Mother Mercy didn’t know what to say. How could she say no? Yet, she wasn’t happy about it. Father McNulty had seen the flyer posted in the vestibule of his church. He thought it was an answer to his prayer. As he explained on the phone, many families did not have the money to buy an Easter dinner. When he saw the flyer, he knew that the Sisters wouldn’t mind donating some of the money they made from the Easter Egg Hunt to buy hams for the poor parishioners. Of course, Mother Mercy said they would be happy to buy hams for the poor.

Hanging up, Mother Mercy sighed and called the local grocer. She ordered four hundred dollars’ worth of hams to be picked up on Saturday. Once the order was complete, she rested her arms and head on the desk. What are we going to do now? I have to get the hams to the needy before the Easter Egg Hunt. How else will the people have what they need for dinner on Easter? she wondered. I had to dip into the five hundred dollars in the bank! And I need every penny to pay the contractor!

Screams from the backyard pulled Mother from her worries.

“NO…OOO!”

Mother jumped from her chair!

“HELP….HELP ME!” the cries continued.

Startled by the cry for help, Sister Wanda wiped her hands and slid the plastic egg she had just filled with a candy coin into her pocket. She ran and beat Mother Mercy out the kitchen door. The other Sisters hurried from their various chores to see what the screams were about. They all arrived in the backyard at the same time.

Baby bunnies were hopping all over the yard. Sister Krumbles was running. First she zigged one way, and then she zagged the other way! As she sprinted around the yard, she grabbed baby bunnies and stuck them in her pocket. However, for every little bunny she put in her pocket, another one jumped out.
